About the legation of Giacomo Soranzo to Germany in 1559–1561

Abstract

The paper continues the series of the author's publications which deals with the legation of the Venetian nobil Giacomo Soranzo (1518–1599). In this text reveal about the features of his diplomatic mission in Germany in 1559–1561. The author of the paper analyses the relazione (annual report) of Giacomo Soranzo to Venetian Doge and Senate and comes to conclusion that the Venetian ambassador revealed the features of political life of Holy Roman Empire in the late 50s – early 60s in the XVI century: the complexity connected with the opening of the session of Council of Trent; with collisions in the relations between the emperor Ferdinand I and the German princes on this event and on the problem of electing his heir Maximilian to be the new King of the Romans; the relations between the emperor and the Sultan, between the emperor and venetian Doge. Giacomo Soranzo emphasized his efforts to justify the position of the venetian Doge in the argument with Empire about the fortress Marano Friuli region.
