Abstract

The article observes the main aspects of Bulgarian participation in the Russo-Turkish wars of the second half of the XVIII – the beginning of the XIX century. This research based on academic papers, published primary sources, investigated archival materials. The author proceeds from the assumption that the crisis of Ottoman Empire could instigate Bulgarians to join the Russian troops. The analysis of the data demonstrates that frequently such troops included the haiduks, sometimes encouraged by the Russian command for the actions in the rearward areas of Ottoman army. Nevertheless, the part of Bulgarian population continued to carry out the duties assigned by Ottoman authorities or engaged in robbery, damaging both Russian and Ottoman troops, which, however, as the comparative materials indicates, did not go beyond Balkan-wide main trends.
