Abstract

The paper attempts to observe the features of the legation of the Venetian nobil Giacomo Soranzo (1518–1599) to England in 1551–1554. In the center of the author’s attention there are the papers of the Venetian diplomat about the appearances and personality of Mary I Tudor (1553–1558), about the beginning of reconstruction of catholic religion in England, about the terms of marriage contract between Mary Tudor and Philip Habsburg, Spanish Prince, the son of Karl V German emperor, the king of Spain to be. Besides it is pointed out that Giacomo Soranzo’s embassy faced some difficulties. The diplomat and his staff had to go through hunger, epidemic of sweating sickness, political disturbance. According to the Venetian ambassador these circumstances put him to great expenses. That is why Giacomo Soranzo thought that the gifts he had received from the English monarchs should be left at his own disposal as a compensation for his expenses. The paper speaks about the legation of the Venetian nobil Giaсomo Soranzo (1518–1599). The author of the paper analyses the relazione (annual report) of Giaсomo Soranzo to Venetian Senate and comes to conclusion that the Venetian ambassador described the complexity of the political situation in England in early XVI. The complexity was caused by changing of power on the English throne, changing of religious policy, collisions of the English court.
