Abstract

The article touches upon the issue of social action programs carried out in the first half of the 19-th century in Russian Orthodox Church in order to support retired clergy and their wives and orphans. The object of the article is revealing the systemacity levels of those aid means as well as evaluating their level of efficiency. The issue is considered through the example of Tver diocese and most of the focus is on charity of the urban clergy. Documents of management and record keeping of diocesan administration and ecclesiastical consistory fund were used here to allow to retrace the state of the spiritual care area over the specified period. The study found that spiritual charity has not yet acquired the features of the system in this period and remained one side of the local diocesan life.
