Abstract

Internal life of Old Russian clergy, and especially the episcopate not often became a subject of scientific research. In presented article attempt to reveal how Old Russian bishops of XI - the first half of the XIII centuries realized the acts and own life is made. The analysis of sources allows to conclude, that the majority of Old Russian very pastors possessed a high self-assessment. The reasons of this phenomenon should be looked for not only in a social origin of prelates, but also features of religious consciousness and specifics of the church relations of a described era.
