An empirical study was conducted to diagnose the readiness levels of middle and high school students to perceive, recognize and interpret irony in a teacher's speech. Irony is considered as a pedagogical method, which can be both effective and ineffective method of speech influence depending on the factors of the speech situation, the main one being the receiver.
