Abstract

Modern Russian education is currently at the turning point of its development influenced by the transition to postindustrial society. Under the circumstances the harmonious balance between universal and national-specific components in the concept of school education development comes to the foreground. This breeds an increasing interest in the historical background of education in Russia, specifically to folk school as an institution that has unambiguously united different trends and controversial attitudes of peasant national mentality. The paper explores the root factors of the theoretical basics of peasant school in the late XIX – early XX centuries in Russia
