Abstract

Information on the first members of the Kozhin clan of Tver is contained is contained in the charter by the Grand Duke of Moscow to their ancestor Vasily Ananyevich for his participation in the battle of Ga-lich (the 27th of January – beginning of February 1450) against Prince Dmitriy Yurievich Shemyaka. The act оформленный in Moscow on the 4th of February 1450 states that the progenitor of the Kozhins arrived from Sweden. His son Vasily (the father of Venerable Macarius of Kal-yazin) distinguished himself and was given a nickname Kozha which evolved into the surname of his descendants. By now the document has been identified as falsified. In the sources of the 16th century the father of the saint is mentioned under the surname of Kozhin. It is possible that this surname had been ascribed to him retroactively on the basis of the nickname of a son of his. In such a case its origin may be associated with two persons: 1) bishop Gennady Kozha, a son of Vasily according to the genealogy of the Kozhins; 2) another son of Vasily which is not included in the genealogy. The Chronicle of Avraamka contains a unique report about the Moscow-Tver alliance of 1450 against Shemyaka. An un-known son of Vasily could have participated in the battle of Galich as a part of the Tver troops distinguishing himself and receiving a nickname which evolved into a surname. The article also discusses the materials about the Swedish ancestor of the Kozhins, the wife and the sister of Macarius of Kalyazin.
