Abstract

The article is devoted to the results of the study of A.D. Maksimov of the city of Orlov Gorodok – a an archaeological site of III–VII centuries. AD in the Upper Mologa basin. The approaches of A.D. Maksimov to the study of the planigraphy of the settlement, to the classification of ceramic material and iron products, to the determination of the place of Orlov Gorodok in the aggregate of early Iron Age monuments, to the study of the economic life of the population. It is emphasized that an important result of the study of ceramics was the conclusion of A.D. Maksimov that the region of the Msta-Molozhsky interfluve of the III–VII centuries. can be considered as an independent archaeological culture. Based on the analysis of knives by A.D. Maksimov determined the time of occurrence of the Orlov Gorodok settlement no earlier than the 3rd–4th centuries. AD and in addition, he concluded that the technology of a three-layer package could have penetrated the territory of Eastern Europe long before the IXth – Xth centuries. AD.
