Abstract

The publication presents the preliminary results in the project: «Church life in Soviet society in the 1940s–1950s: religious practices of the population in the Kalinin region in the memoirs of “war children”». The publication based on the analysis of the systemized materials deposited in the Archival Department of the Ecclesiastic Library of the Tver Diocese (Tver Metropolia). So there are revealed the whole number of active and closed orthodox churches, serving clergy and nonstaff employees (psalmists, regents, singers, watchmen, cleaners). Data from reports of Bishop Arseny, the administrator of the diocese, deanery of church districts and parish priests, letters of the authorized Council for the Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church under the Council of Ministers of the USSR in the Kalinin region characterize negative changes in church life, which are viewed from 1948–1949.
