Abstract

The article reveals the features of the formation of the views of A.A. Spitsyn on the evolution of burial rituals in the Upper Volga region. The most complete systematization of the region's burial antiquities was pre-sented by A. A. Spitsyn in his unpublished work of 1921 «An Archaeo-logical Sketch of the Tver Province». At the current level of study of burial sites, the assumption of A.A. Spitsyn on the continuity of the cultures of long mounds - hills - mounds with cremation and inhumation is generally confirmed. The most relevant topics of the transition period from the early Iron Age to the early Middle Ages, due to the increase in the quality and quantity of archaeological research in the late XX - early XXI centuries, allow modern archaeologists to continue the discussion begun a hundred years ago by A.A. Spitsyn, but on a more detailed level.
