Abstract

The article argues the use of the “churching” parameter as one of the criteria for a qualitative study of religiosity. Based on the analysis of a wide range of sources, the cult activity of the russian orthodox peasantry is studied. The questions of the intensity of religious behavior and the normativity of church prescriptions in the peasant environment are raised. The study showed that during the second half of the nineteenth and at the very beginning of the twentieth century religious behavior and the degree of churching of russian orthodox peasants did not undergo any significant changes. At the same time, peasant customs often cor-rected canonical church imperatives.
