Abstract

The article traces the process of development and improvement of school education in the Tver province in connection with the opening and opera-tion of a private school for womin-teachers training in the 1870s. It is shown that during this period, the objective tasks facing the country to intensify agricultural production were thoroughly restrained by the inertia of the peasant mass. In this regard, the problem of spreading knowledge and skills in the rural environment that can overcome the traditional backwardness and morally «lift» the bulk of producers was updated. Only persons closely connected with peasant life were able to act successfully in this direction. From this point of view, the contribution to the educational process of a private (then – Zemstvo) school opened by a prominent public figure P. p. Maksimovich is considered.
