Abstract

Among the resent literature on the events of 1918-1922 the book «Seven “why” of the Russian Civil war in Russia» by A.V. Ganin is distinguished. Its author claims that its outcome was largely determined by the position of the officer corps of the old Russian army. The reviewer insists that this setting distorts the meaning and nature of the Civil war. In a broad sense, the war between the reds and whites became the apogee of a long-term confrontation between the cultures of the elites and the masses, the upper and lower strata of Russian society. The civil war, like the revolution, developed according to the laws of social synergy, and not according to the instructions of the military command. Any other points of view bears now an obvious anachronism, inherited from Soviet propaganda literature, which insisted on the “class” character of the multidimensional Russian Civil War.
