Abstract

The article is based on data from the Kievan Chronicle Code of 1198, which is preserved as part of the Ipatiev Chronicle. This is evidence of the chronicle articles of 1151, 1161, 1169 and 1180 about nomads – kovuy. In pre-Mongolian time, they lived in the territories of Kiev and Chernigov principalities. Together with other nomadic ethnic groups (Pechenegs, Torks, Berendeys) they served the Russian princes, participated in their internecine wars and in campaigns against external enemies. Russian princes were interested most of all in the military service of the Kovuys. Initially, this service was carried out under the command of warlordskovuys, but then this situation began to change, and the Russian boyar appointed by the prince began to lead the kuvys. Despite the small number of information about Kovoy, it turns out that they changed their places of resettlement, trying to be closer to the Russian fortresses that protected them. In the event of acute conflicts with the ruling princes, the Kovui transferred to other principalities, where they were provided with land for living and farming. Thus, existence is fixed in the XII century in Russia, internal nomadic migrations.
