Abstract

The investigations of the portage landscapes that were realized by Russian scientists are not the unite system in methodological, methodical and informative aspects. In this article the zone of the water divide of Dvina and Volga at the Valdai hills is being analyzed. The intercultural communications through the portages resulted here during the epochs of primitive society, middle ages and new times. The author describes the concrete landscape situations, clears the motives of the moving of the people across the continental water divide and the choice of the vectors of moving, shows their historical importance. The different types of sources are being used in analyzes: the maps, the archaeological artifacts, the toponymy objects, the written texts, the information about the church and the manor geography. The author puts the problem of the complex interdisciplinary scientific researches of this territory.
