Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of several themes from Karelian his-tory, which have been explored in the course of the collective research project titled «Traditional Society as a Factor of Stability in a Multiethnic Borderland: The Case of Karelia, XVIIth –beginning of the XXth centu-ries». It focuses on the patterns of interaction between the rural society (mainly, the peasantry) of the Northern borderland region of the Russian empire and the Tsarist agents and bureaucrats, and how the state interfer-ence influenced life in the region.
