Abstract

The article deals with the activity of the managers of the diocese in the period of «church renaissance» on the example of the Kalinin diocese. The main attention is paid to the characteristic of "church renaissance" and the connection of this problem with the management of the diocese. The historiographical review shows that the topic remains controversial, among researchers there are supporters and opponents of this concept. The managers of the diocese were not independent figures. The author notes that the bishops were constantly under the control of the office of the сommissioner of Council for the Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church, and diocesan life depended on their interaction. On the basis of archival data, author concluded that the diocesan bishops of the Kalinin diocese faithfully performed their functions, were able to negotiate with the commissioner. Their activity was expressed in opening of new churches, replenishment of personnel of clergy, increase in number of church sacraments.
