Abstract

The article analyzes the process of forming an important element of civil society - the destruction of class boundaries in the course of Russian modernization. The author took as an example the clergy. This class was quite numerous and in the course of its professional activity communicated with all other estates. The author used a number of sources and showed that the measures of Alexander's modernization were aimed at the merging of estates. This process concerned the clergy. The study of journalism and memoirs showed that the clergy itself had ambiguously assessed this process. It wanted to retain the status of a privileged class, but at the same time expected deeper reforms that could improve the material condition of church officials.
