Abstract

The article considers the micro-region of Udomlya lake district, which was a part of Novgorod land in the middle ages. The analysis of the archaeological materials of the last quarter of the I – beginning of II thousand A.D., obtained during the expeditions of the Tver state University. Buildings, thing and ceramic set of excavated settlements in the Troitsa-1 and Mitroshino-2 allow us to conclude about sustainable orientation of the population of the micro-region in the North-Western Novgorod territory from the VIII–X centuries to middle ages. The received material received, taking into account the topography of the settlements, evidence of close economic and cultural contacts with the population of Novgorod land, emphasize transit location of the micro-region on major transport arteries, connecting Central and South-Eastern regions of the Novgorod land. The historical situation in the Udomlya lake district finds many parallels with other peripheral regions of Northern Russia during their colonization and development by the Slavic population.
