THE PETROGRAD GARRISON ON THE EVE OF 1917: FROM EVERYDAY LIFE TO THE FRONTLINE CITY OF THE REVOLUTION

Abstract

The article is devoted to the every-day life of soldiers of the Petrograd garrison on the eve of the February Revolution. On the basis of the new documents from the Russian state military historical archive the author considers the peculiarities of everyday life and the behavior of the soldiers of the Guard units, their relationship with the officers, gendarmes, police, urban population. It shows a steady increase in various types of conflicts with the municipal authorities, the police and the officers in which soldiers were involved. A significant influence on the behavior of the soldiers rendered numerous deserters flooded the capital. The fight against them by the military and the civil administration did not bring success. It is shown that the rebellious mood of the soldiers clearly found himself a few months before the February Revolution
