Abstract

The article examines the composition of the population of Rusa at the end of the XV century. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the Novgorodian cadastres, chronicles and formal notes. It is noted that Rusa was the greatest city of the Novgorodian Land and the most important center of salt-working. The economic status of the city attracted people from Europe and the different regions of Russia. Citizens of Rusa were not only Slavs, but also representatives of the Baltic and Finnish ethnic groups – Karelians and Vod. Long-term political relationship between Novgorodian Land and Lithuania appeared that at the end of the XV century in Rusa migrants from the Grand Principality of Lithuania were found repeatedly. Material culture of Rus confirms close economic connections of the population of the city with Western Europe. There is reason to assume that Rusa was a multiethnic settlement.
