Abstract

University of Eastern Finland, Faculty of geography and history, Finland There are many elements that through the ages had an influence on concretizing the tradition and the concept of its school of thought in the Monastery of Svir, which is over 500 years old. These elements can be found both in the periods of advancing the Monastery and in the changes, which happened in the churches in the entire Russia. The hagiography of Alexander Svirsky, who found the monastery, has been written in year 1545 and because its popularity it was copied widely. The historical material concerning the 1500 century was destroyed in the wars between 1500thand 1600th century. Despite this, the hagiography survived in many copies and that is why it's significance is emphasized. The research problem in this article is the interaction between fact and fiction in the hagiography based on following arguments: 1: The true followers and alumnus of Alexander Svirsky stayed mainly unknown. 2: Those persons who didn’t have connections at all to the Monastery of Svir had been made saints and national heroes.
