Abstract

Donations for private services were the main source of material security of orthodox parish clergy in the second half of XIX and the beginning of the XX century. There were a lot of problems between clergy and parishioners because of voluntariness of donations for private services. On the basis of archival and published sources the article analyses specific difficulties of income-generation through service of church sacraments by priests of the Voronezh, Kursk, Oryol and Tambov dioceses. The author comes to conclusion that donations for private services didn't suit clergy of Сentral Black Earth. Priests were dissatisfied with material dependence on parishioners. Poverty of the clergy reduced the authority of the Orthodox Church on the Russian Empire.
