Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the life and work of Bishop John (Sokolov) of Smolensk and Dorogobuzh at the stage of his service in the Diocese of Smolensk. In the article an attempt is made to consider: the state of the Diocese of Smolensk, in which its bishop John found; to analyze the beginning of the ministry of Bishop John in the Diocese of Smolensk and its administrative policy with regard to the clergy, flock and sectarian movements; also to review the activities in relation to the spiritual educational institutions of the Diocese of Smolensk. As additional literature, articles from journals and memoirs of persons who knew the Reverend personally were used. This method allows to approach the most objective view of the person and ministry of the person being studied. Based on the available materials, the author of the article shows the contribution of Bishop John to the development of church life in Government of Smolensk, and his role in the upbringing of the younger generation of the clergy of the Smolenschina.
