Abstract

The article suggests stadial and formal stylistic classification of Slavic idols. Basic selected steps correspond to the stages of development of Slavic pagan religious concepts and also demonstrate the process of emergence of Slavonic monumental sculpture. In the first stage, the anthropomorphic image of God was formed, there are idols of low and high proportions of stone and wood with figure of the face and head. They correspond to medium-sized teams, family and territorial communities, professional groups, emerging during the era of the decay of primitive society. In the second stage, the idols were characterized with canon of poses, attributes and regalia, they are mostly one-sided monuments. These idols correspond to the developing pantheon of pagan gods. In the third stage there are four-sides idols, their composition is reflected the view of the world and the system of subordination of the gods.
