Abstract

The article aims to analyze the development of the image of the outstanding publicist and politician in the XVII century Commonwealth, the castellan of Lwow Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro (c. 1620–1679) in the works of the contemporary Polish historians and literary historians. The author pays special attention to the works of such scholars as Henryk Barycz, Wladyslaw Czaplinski, Zbigniew Rynduch, Zbigniew Ogonowski, Ewa Jolanta Glebicka and so on. The contemporary historiography’s characteristic feature which is noticed in the article, is withdrawal of the typical for the Positivism period reception of the castellan of Lwow as an extreme fanatic, and emergence of perception of Fredro as a moderate and pragmatic publicist, who followed the policy of golden mean. Also the article demonstrates in which way Fredro’s unified image was «stratified» in the historical investigations of the second half of the XX and the early XXI century because of accenting different images (for instance, images of politician, economist, pedagogue, aphorist and so on) by scholars specializing in different fields who didn’t tried to create an integral image of the castellan of Lwow.
