The article examines the little-known problem of the evolution of public opinion on educating the younger generation and the formation of personality in the context of the modernization of the Alexandrine. On the basis of archival materials and memoirs of graduates of religious schools, the authors showed that the process of modernization and development of capitalist relations has influenced the educational process in private schools. The article examines the process of transformation of various aspects of life in boarding schools as an example of religious schools and seminaries: living conditions, nutrition, parenting practices. The author concluded that the process of social change views on education and identity formation was proceeded slowly and did not meet the needs of the time.
