The article examines the composition of the population of Ivangorod fortress at the end of the XV century. Special attention is paid to the foreign policy measures of Russia in the north-west direction. It is noted that people from dif-ferent Russian regions were attracted for the construction and the protection of Ivangorod. It is noteworthy that some Cossacks who guarded the border had Finnish names and ethnic nicknames. Living and various works in Ivangorod could be a duty of local inhabitants. Such a large-scale activities related to the involvement of people from different ethnic groups and the Russian lands for the construction and the warfare were a novelty for the North-West region. There is reason to assume that Ivangorod, defencive and trade center, was a multiethnic settlement.
