Abstract

The article considers the possibility of use of cadastres as a source of in-depth study of benefactors of city churches. Materials of cadastres allow to learn about benefactors not only of certain churches or monasteries, but also about all of the benefactors of the city, their social status, special features of their benefactions. According to the analysis of the cadastre of Tver 1685–1686, which includes descriptions of all the churches, for the first time the benefactors of the city churches are described. Different groups of benefactors are represented, including the Royal family members, the noble class, clergy and merchants. The composition of the benefactions, the way of influence of the benefactors’ social origin on place and type of the benefactions are analyzed. The chronology of the benefactions is investigated apart. We also made conclusions of the completeness of the cadastre’s data.
