The criminal or the victim: the family violence at the end of XIX – beginning the XX century in Tver region

Abstract

Fundamental forms of the family violence the victim of which there are women and their modus operandi in Tver region at the end of XIX – beginning of XX century are explored in the article. The nature of interaction between psychological, physical and economic violence impact and transformation victims to a criminal is analyzed in terms of the memoirs's and criminal cases's facts. The author pays special attention to the role of traditional and written law in family's conflict resolution. Methological approach of local history allows to understand the fundamental forms of family violence in Russian empire and basic form of the women's self-defence and level of their emancipation by scrutinizing typical criminal cases of Tver region's women.
