Abstract

Тhis article examines a unique document – the autobiography/self-obituary of Evgeniya Isaakovna Yaroslavskaya-Markon (1902–1931). The document was written in the punishment isolator on Zayachy Island in Solovetsky camp. Women’s self-obituaries written in the Gulag are extremely rare. In her selfobituary, Yaroslavskaya-Markon writes about her life before her imprisonment to the Solovetsky camp. Special attention is paid to the reasons that made Iaroslavskaia-Markon challenge all authorities and every social convention. The author arrives at a conclusion that she was well aware of the Jewish problem in Russia and since childhood cultivated the idea of justice for everyone. In 1923, she married a poet-biocosmist Aleksandr Yaroslavsky. He was arrested and interned to the Solovetsky camp. Evgeniya challenged all authorities and every social convention: she lived in the streets with the homeless, and stole for the sake of principle. Immediately after her husband’s arrest Yaroslavskaya-Markon started plotting his escape. She was arrested and sent to the Solovetsky camps. Her bold, active protest made her a legend in camp lore.
