BURIAL MOUNDS SELCO IN THE UPPER WESTERN DVINA ACCORDING TO PALEOANTHROPOLOGY

Abstract

This article analyzes the anthropological material from the burial mounds Selco/Avdeevo. New paleoanthropological data give possibilities to connect people, leave this cemetery, with the population of the Eastern Baltic. Male skulls from the burial mounds Selco/Avdeevo attributed to subbrachycranial craniologically type «Ushuri» represented in the Aiviekste basin (the lower reaches of the Western Dvina-Daugava). On the basis of craniological types that inherit the type «Ushuri» the part of modern Latvians, northeastern Belarusians and separate groups of Russians are formed. This anthropological layer present on the majority of late medieval urban samples of Polotsk. In the light of the new paleoanthropological data the population of Selco/Avdeevo is a local group that is different from the surrounding population as anthropological appearance, so the material culture.
