WORLD WAR I AND THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY IN RUSSIA

The article is devoted to the awakening of the self-consciousness of the Muslim peoples as a result of the liberation era reforms of the XIX century in Russia. The Muslim part of the Russian society was embraced by the ideas of liberation of the individual and the recognition of the human and civil rights. Progressive part of the Muslim community advocated the establishment of law and order in the country on the basis of freely chosen participation of people's representa-tives in the administration and government. The article shows the formation and development of Zemsrvo and the the changing attitude of the Muslim liberal leaders to this institute. The results of this process did not meet the requirements of the Muslim community, especially during the First World War. In 1917 Muslim leaders fought for political, civil and religious liberty, the full equality of Muslims as citizents of the democratic Russia.Downloads
