OLD RUSSIAN FUNERAL MONUMENTS OF UPPER VOLGA: THE SPATIAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

The present article represents results of studying of funeral monuments of upper Volga X– XIII centuries methods of the spatial analysis with application GIS–Technologies (software package ArcView 3.2 is used). The considered territory includes pool of the Upper Volga’s, from its source to a mouth of Nerl’ (the right in-flow of the river Volga). On sources XIX – the beginnings of XXI century are revealed 730 funeral monuments, from them 117 were exposed to excavation. Quantitative characteristics of monuments are studied, ranging of all burial groups in the sizes and on degree of a level of scrutiny is made. The density of an arrangement of barrows is defined. Areas of a congestion of funeral monuments, the microre-gions characterised by relative completeness of a level of scrutiny are allocated. The parity of buried men and women in barrows is considered. The received conclusions are interpreted within the limits of studying of history of settling of upper Volga in X – XIII centuries.
