The article examines the history of staying of the oldest Russian cadaster books in the Moscow Main Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the first half – middle of the 19th century. A number of observations were made about the history of the creation and expansion of the archival Inventory of 1806, which kept to be operating in the Central State Archive of Ancient Documents until the 1970s. The role of N. M. Karamzin was revealed that he played in the attribution of the archival convolute which included fragments of three cadaster books of the Novgorod land. A brief description of the cadaster books given in the «History of the Russian State» played an important role in attracting attention to this category of sources of the scientific community. K.A. Nevolin met this description and used cadaster books for his writing. Nevolin's monograph of 1853 served as an important impetus for the publication in the series «Novgorod Cadaster Books», started by the Archeographic Commission in 1858. For the first time in historiography attention is paid to the fact of the absence of some oldest books in the archive between 1841 and 1857. They were engaged by V.A. Polenov, director of the Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and manager of the State and St. Petersburg Main ArchivesDownloads
