Abstract

The article examines the change in Russian legislation with regards to the rights of transferring ancestral property in the 18th century and the first half of the19th century. The author maps the range of persons to whom a property owner could transfer their ancestral property within the bounds of the law. Owing to the fact that this range only included those of legal blood kinship to the property owner, the owner's wishes were often did not coincide with their limited ability to choose a heir. Through the use of archive material, the author identifies and examines the methods employed by nobility to avoid transferring their ancestral property to legal heirs, for the benefit of il-legitimate children
