«DYAKOVO TYPE» HILLFORTS: TO THE QUESTION OF THEIR FUNCTION

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of different functions of the «Dyakovo type» hillforts. In the author's opinion hillforts were the unique phenomenon on the territory of the East-European forest zone in the period of the Early Iron Age and the Early Middle Ages. The author comes to conclusion that hillfort was a socially significant space and it carried out different functions depending on circumstances: settlement or industrial center, burial place or sanctuary. The ritual function of hillforts was analyzed in more details.
