Abstract

The article examines the such phenomenon of Russian religious life as mass selfburnings or so called ‘gari’. Using wide spectrum of documents the author reconstructs that the great part of old Believers rejected this form of fanatical behavior . However, the influence Old Believers’ ideologists was so great that mass and personal suicides took place until middle of 19th century.
