THE GEOGRAPHY OF OLD-BELIEVER’S SELF-BURNINGS

Abstract

In the article is presented scantily explored aspect of the history of old-believer’s self-burnings - gradual spreading of «burnings» on the territory of Russian state. The first self-burnings took place in the centre of the country, later on ritual self-burnings reached outly-ing districts, where the influential preachers - monks of Solovezkiy monastery - supported the idea of fiery death. The author clears up regularities of choosing the place and the time for self-burnings and comes to the conclusion, that the folk beliefs, connected with the fire, and Christian ideas about sacral time had the main importance in all these cases.
