«... PRAVOCLAVIE S ERETYCHESTVOM MESCHAYUT»: TO THE QUESTION ABOUT CEREMONIAL, INITIAL AND DOGMATIC DESTRUCTION IN «RUSSIAN CHURCHES» THE GREAT PRINCIPALITY OF LITHUANIA BEFORE BREST CHURCH UNION
Abstract
By the time the Union of Brest-Litovsk was signed in 1596, with the dominating illiteracy of the spiritual authorities of the «Russian Church» in the Great Principality of Lithuania, the strong influence of the Jesuit propaganda on the one hand and the Church Reformation movement on the other hand had led to considerable distortions not only in the system of rites and canons, but also in the dogmatism proper. The Orthodox faith, the service and internal relations inside the church in the Lithuanian Principality on the eve of the Union were exacerbated by some distortions in dogmas and rites, which had been caused deliberately or as a result of ignorance. In particular, this was displayed by the decrees of the Novograd Church Assembly of 1596.Downloads
