PECULIARITIES OF IN-CHURCH LIFE OF THE ORTHODOX BELIEVERS (ON THE MATERIALS OF THE SMOLENSK REGION)

Abstract
The field of research: state-church relations in the Russian province of 1910-1930s, social history of the clergy, social and mental characteristic of the Orthodox community, the Soviet faith-related policy, archival studies, methodology. The paper is devoted to the study of peculiarities and delineation of borderlines of religious consciousness of provincial residents in the early 20th century. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the functional problems of the church organization on the eve of the Revolution of 1917, as well as to reveal reasons and manifestations of the process of cecularizations of provincial mentality at large on the regional material. The author notes that trust in the church at that period was undermined by specifics of interrelations between the church and the state of the Sinodal period. The “batyushka΄s” image was distorted by conflicts among parishioners and brethren as well as by a general moral decay of the clergy, instances of their asocial behaviour. As to the peasants they were alienated from the church by side craftsmanship and poverty. A possibility of resolving evident contradictions was lost in 1917.Downloads
