Abstract

The authors of the article reveal a little-known page in the activities of the Russian educator M.K. Tenisheva, related to the organization of medical and social assistance in the frontline region during the First World War. The key sources were documents from the State Archive of the Smolensk Region and the wartime periodical press. Using the approaches of women's and everyday history allowed us to draw a conclusion about the changing social roles of women in wartime conditions. Tenisheva, using numerous social, labor and financial resources, opened the first military hospital in the city. She established an emergency delivery service for the arriving wounded to the infirmaries, opened the first X-ray room in the city, and attracted the best doctors in the capital. M.K. Tenisheva's infirmary was honored with a visit from the emperor.
