Abstract

This article provides a description of surviving information on the socio-economic situation in Novgorod in the 12^th–13th centuries, closely related to foreign travelers. In this article, foreign travelers are defined as all people not native to Novgorod, who temporarily resided in Novgorod. Novgorod developed under conditions of a constant influx of foreigners. Information about the peculiarities of Novgorodian life was reflected in sources left by foreigners much more vividly, than in local sources, in part because the travelers themselves were more interested in preserving them. For practical reasons, information was recorded about the ups and downs of foreigners' relationships with city authorities, the difficulties of road communications, etc.
