Abstract

The author of the publication, based on documents from the State Archive of the Smolensk region, reveals the organization of daily life of women's gymnasiums in the Russian province in the 1860s–1918. They became important socio-cultural centers in provincial and county towns. The significant growth of female students demonstrated significant changes in the views of provincial society on women's roles in society and their social identity. The development of social communication skills, charity, and aesthetic qualities was realized through the organization of performances, musical evenings, joint excursions, walks, and involvement in charity events. Female students were actively involved in the social and political life of the early 20th century. The First World War sparked a patriotic upsurge and a strong response among the female students.
