Historical Experience of Single-Sex Education for Women and the At-titude to it Modern Russia

A review of the history of separate education of persons of different sexes in Russia over ten centuries contains an answer to the question: do women need separate classes and schools? The main trend of higher education for women (at first at home, since the 19th century – three–stage, home – gymnasium – higher school) is the expansion of the range of subjects and cultural horizons, the manifestation of interest in practical orientation, health issues. After 1917, there was no separate education by sex in Russia; a return to it in 1943–1954 did not reveal any advantages. The creation of the Boarding School for Girls of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in 2008 is evidence of a social experiment aimed at creating a social elevator for girls from military families. It is not intended to turn this unique educational experiment into mass practice.
