Abstract

This paper explores C. Skinner's approach to interpreting early modern thought. Skinner's contextualism is expressed in the notion that texts can only be correctly understood and interpreted when placed in an appropriate lingustic context. It is argued that Skinner's interest in interpreting texts within the framework of political theory was driven by his belief in the need for historical accuracy in various works on political theory. Skinner's interpretation of key concepts in Machiavelli's thought is examined.
