The article provides a brief review of the development of microdistrict studies in the Russian archeology. It features the criteria for identifying microdistricts, approaches to interpreting this concept, variants of classifying microdistricts and their characteristics in vertical (spatial) and horizontal (chronological) sections. The main factors determining the conditions for ensuring the basic needs of the earliest communities, which have a key influence on the process of microdistrict formation, are reviewed. On the basis of the territory of Transbaikalia, the possibilities of the predictive analysis method are shown using data on high-flow springs, paleovolcanoes, rocky outliers with "screen" type planes as markers of places as having potential for identifying archaeological microdistricts in hard-to-reach highlands and mountain-taiga landscapes.
