Romantic relationships with an artificial intelligence system: ethical and family law issues
Keywords:
artificial intelligence, romantic relationship with an AI system, love for robots, marriage with a robot, marriage with a virtual AI partnerAbstract
Proceeding from the foreign literature analysis predominantly, the article examines ethical and family law issues caused by digitalization and robotization breaking into the private sphere of romantic relationships. Even today, artificial intelligence systems make it possible for oneself to create virtual and robotized romantic and sexual partners. The ethical problems of the new era of romantic relationships are resulting from the fact that users “fall in love” with their AI companions, experience feelings and affection towards them, thus necessitating a fundamental reconsideration of the very understanding of love and romantic relationships. With regard to the family law, “love for robots” raises the issues of marriage registration with AI partners, of its conditions, obstacles and dissolution, the issues of the legal obligations of spouses/ parents / children in such marriages, as well as the issues of forming the common property of the spouses, its division and the possibilities of inheriting the property. Attempts to address these issues require a very careful interdisciplinary approach without cherishing hopes that “this can never happen”.
