Abstract

Public control is the most relevant and understandable institution at the level of the local self-government. Citizens directly feel the results of the work of local governments, other municipal bodies and organizations on this level. Citizens have a reasonable interest in checking and evaluating the activities of local bodies. The subjects of public control in municipalities are legislatively defined only by public chambers (councils), which are clearly insufficient. Active citizens and public associations cannot act on their own initiative as initiators of public control activities. Analysis of legislative norms and municipal practice indicates the need to expand the list of subjects of the public control. The addition of such list is justified in the research. Citizens and their associations well as the possibilities of the territorial public self-government bodies to public monitoring should be added to the list of public control subjects list. Other proposals have been made in the article. Such suggestions can positively affect the further development of public control in municipalities.
